The old stone jetty on big rat island has an intriguing history. It was built entirely of stone and tram lines were laid along it to transport Guano from the island to ships for export from 1894 until 1904.
After the dried Guano was collected into piles then bagged on the island it was conveyed in Trucks drawn by horses to the end of the stone jetty where it was taken by lighter boats to large vessels anchored in deep water.
